Samantha Burns

Although Samantha Burns is not a mother, she is a missing person whose case is closely connected to missing mother, Alice Donovan. When two escaped convicts started their crime spree through several states, Samantha was one of the first victims, losing her life on November 11, 2002. Her car was found the next day, still burning, in a remote area of West Virginia, but there was no sign of Samantha, and she remains missing.

Samantha was a student at Marshall University enrolled in physical therapy classes, an employee of a department store, and lived at home with her parents in East Hamlin, West Virginia. As a typical 19 year old, she was visiting friends and on her way home when she called her mother using her cell phone. It was the last time Samantha was heard from and her cell phone was uncharacteristically turned off.

Although the murderers were tried, convicted, and sent to death row, Samantha's remains have yet to be found. Her family and friends have no closure, no way to mend the gaping hole in their hearts, and continue to live the daily torture brought on by selfish acts of two monsters.

As the news continues about finding the remains of Alice Donovan, there have always been two families waiting for the same results. There is the expected possibility of resolution for Alice's family, and hope that the family of Samantha Burns can reach the same conclusion. Through much prayer, and the selfless work of organizations like CUE Center, their volunteers, SAR groups, K-9 and all the branches of law enforcement involved, we hope Samantha Burn's family will one day soon have their questions answered.

Alice Donovan, Coming Home

Much has been written and on broadcast news the past couple days about the discovery of human remains in Horry County, SC and speculation about those remains being Alice Donovan. If you follow the news you know that CUE Center for Missing Persons, and specifically, Monica Caison, has had a connection with this case since Alice was kidnapped and murdered 6 years ago. Monica searched the rural fields and woods of North and South Carolina every day for over 4 months back in 2002. Nothing was ever found, and two daughters hit the downward spiral of unending torture and grief.

Angie Gilchrist and Jennifer Warner were left, not only without their mother, but with the open wound of not knowing where her final resting place would be. When a family member is missing, there's no closure, no conclusion to the grieving process, and daily torture. The case made national news, the two killers were sentenced to death row, and the news dropped off the radar, but Angie and Jen, with their emotions boiling over, continued to live the daily nightmare.

One day I was wondering what happened in that case, googled Alice's name, and found a little entry on a blog, with some personal pictures, written by daughter Angie. It broke my heart to see her words with all the sadness still there, and I felt I needed to see where this was heading. I started this blog, Mothers are Vanishing, and wrote an entry about Alice. I knew her case details well, it all happened in my little home town at the beach, and wondered if she was ever found.

Angie contacted me through the blog, we corresponded, became "online friends", and met for the first time at the final stop on the Cue Center "Road to Remember" Tour in Whiteville, NC. Angie was instrumental and a big part of our networking site, Peace4 the Missing, and there her words began to bloom, she met several others who knew her pain, and she's become known for her compassion. Angie and Jen have endured every tumultuous emotion the last six years and have had to deal with pressures unknown to many.

Yesterday the dam broke. After making the decision to actively get back into finding her mother, after heroically holding a memorial benefit, after contacting Monica Caison to reopen the case, after days of searching, after finding remains exactly where the killer said they would be, after news reporters hovering all day long, after 6 years of not knowing where her mother might be, Angie broke down and cried.

If the DNA results confirm that indeed these are the remains of Alice Donovan, Angie and Jen and all of us who know and love them, will travel down a different emotional path, one that has been on hold for 6 long years. The grieving process will find it's way to completion for them, in its own way, it its own time, but at least now they will know that Alice, their mother, is finally home and her soul is resting in peace.

Jennifer Warner made the comment in a news interview that even if the DNA proves that it's not her mother, it's still someone's family member, another family that has been waiting to know, and it gives her a small bit of comfort to know that someone's family will find resolution.

With the unending quest of Monica Caison and her band of selfless volunteers, the friends online and in real life, a "special" FBI agent, and family members close to them, Angie and Jen will have a huge network of support and encouragement to help them cope and help them find the peace that has been missing in their lives for 6 long years.

Bradley Olsen, Monday4 the Missing

What were you doing when you were 26?  Some readers may be in that age bracket, but I've been living twice that long, yet I can remember the days of being 26, drinking with my friends and closing the bar.  What if it was January 19, cold and frigid, 8 degrees,  your friends left earlier, and you were pretty well intoxicated?   Wouldn't you  call your friends, ask them to come for you, maybe call a cab?  They say the first thing to go when you're drinking is your judgement, and being numb to the cold, maybe you would catch a ride with a stranger.

All speculating aside, this is precisely what happened on a cold January 19 night in DeKalb, Illinois.  Bradley Olsen vanished into the night, intoxicated, last seen in the parking lot looking for a ride home.  No one knows if he got that ride or where he ended up that night.  It's safe to say he didn't walk away from his family, his daughter, and his life.

According to reports, Brad's family was on vacation, returned home on January 24, and when they had no contact with him, filed a missing persons report and started searches of the area around Bar One, the last place Brad was seen.  The family had never been out of touch with Brad for more than a couple days, so it was totally out of character, and they feel he has been harmed.

Something has definitely happened to him because he lived here with us,” his mother, Sue Olsen said. “There was never a 48-hour period where we didn't know where Brad was. Even whenever we would go out of town, he'd always call.”

Sue Olsen, Brad's mother, describes him as always smiling, living life to the fullest. Brad's little girl sees his billboard and waves, telling her daddy "hi".

Over the last two years, extensive searches have been made, over land, under water, air searches and scent dogs. Nothing has turned up as a clue to what happened to Brad.  Hope is very powerful, but when it fades, families seek closure, they need to come out of limbo.

"I would have never thought that when this all started we would be talking about a two-year anniversary," Maple Park resident Sue Olsen said Tuesday, her voice quivering.

They will never give up the search for Brad, never stop looking for the answers to pass along to his daughter, never will they give up hope that he is found.  There is a close knit family that is waiting, 2 years and 6 days as of this writing,  and they need to know that Brad Olsen is resting in peace.

The man with the infectious smile, the love of life, his family, and his daughter is out there somewhere.  If you hold the key to finding him, please come forward and give this family the answers they need.

Renee Pernice, Clues

Even though news reports have slowed down the past few days, Renee Pernice is still missing, and her children, as far as what I can find, are still in the care of their father, Shon Pernice, the last person to see Renee alive on January 2. He has given inconsistent statements to police regarding exactly when he last saw her and the circumstances.

Clues according to search warrants made public:

  • Shon Pernice used an electronic key card to enter the rear door of a hazmat station where cleaning solvents are stored. This took place at 4:30am, January 3.
  • Detectives saw Shon Pernice drive away from the home with Renee's dog, go to a park, drop off the dog and drive away. This took place on January 6. (Detectives picked up the dog)
  • Police have collected blood evidence, and discovered a reddish stain on the ceiling and a spot on the garage floor that tested positive as human blood.
  • Police recovered latex gloves from coat and pants pockets which had various stains on them.
  • Paperwork for divorce proceedings was found in Renee Pernice's home office.

Renee's family has done everything right, keeping her name in the public arena, candlelight vigil, press conferences as well as cooperating with the ongoing investigation, all the while riding the roller coaster of emotions packed into the information they are required to process. They have yet to see their grandchildren since their mother vanished.

Renee and Shon have two children together and are said to be staying with their dad. Shon also has a daughter from a previous marriage.

They haven't seen their grandparents since Renee went missing.

"As you can imagine, we've lost our loved one and we can't reach out to her and we'd dearly love to see those boys," said Pretz.
According to comments found on some online discussion boards, Shon Pernice is not a stranger to the grisly ugliness of violent death and, according to some, had a strange fascination with it. Apparently he is living by the words spoken in another case with the same initials, S.P., "Deny, deny, deny".

All we, the public, can do at this point is help Renee's family keep her picture and information out there to keep the story alive until such a time as she is found. Pray for her children and family members that the time will be soon and the wheels of justice can start to turn.

Mary Badaracco: In Her Daughter's Words

written by Mary Badaracco's daughter, Beth Profeta

My life was shattered 24 years ago. My mom,Mary Badaracco, vanished from her home. Yes I did say 24 YEARS! The last person that saw my mom alive, her husband of 14 years, STILL HAS NO COMMENT! This man, our ex stepfather, TOLD US TO "TELL NO-ONE and DO NOT GO TO THE COPS". He told us his lawyer would handle it, however...the only thing his lawyer did was slither into court and enter a motion for divorce on the grounds of desertion, only 9 days after mom supposedly disappeared, without reporting her missing. Meanwhile, he already had his mistress moved into my mom's house.

About 10 days had already passed by the time I was finally told that my mom had supposedly "taken off" on August 20, 1984. I knew right away something was terribly wrong, I knew our mom would have never "taken off", not after all we'd been through together! I was also told her car remained at her home, a smashed windshield was evident, I suppose only to me, that foul play should be suspected as it was in the driveway, damaged.

So I, (as usual) defied his orders and convinced my sister, who was still in a state of shock from being told the previous week by this ex family that our mom was missing, my only sister, who was told to especially not tell me that our mom was gone. Why would she comply? I feel she was scared to death that our worst nightmare
had come true! The day had come that they went too far and really hurt our mom! Once I knew I told my sister that we must run, not walk, to the police!

Throughout our moms 14year marriage to this man, she also raised all 4 of his kids. We were subjected to much domestic abuse from these sickos. By the time mom realized this, she didn't have a clue how to get away from him! Several times after he'd beat our mom severely we'd flee the home and stay with friends only for him to eventually find us and bring us back to that house, usually by threats and force, or as in one instance, having our Grandma by knife point, while my sis and I could only run and hide under the bed and cry.

Back in the 60's and 70's she never reported this to police. Why would she? He is friends with the cops, he still is friends with people in high places, that's why this case is not solved!

One crucial error the state police made is regarding our moms damaged car. The CSP investigator 1st on scene was "D B's" buddy. They believed him when he told them "the bitch took off and stole my money, too". He told one cop that mom broke the windshield of her car that was left at her house, but he was overheard telling another trooper that he did it! Although I kept asking about the car for over 20 years, I was like a frikken broken record. I insisted the police find this car, I knew it was a key piece of evidence! The police told me to find the VIN number and they would run a search, even though I later found out they, of course, had mom's license plate number the entire time. " D B" got rid of her car and was never even questioned about the whereabouts of this car!

We have had our 1st arrest in all these years. A new state trooper has uncovered much information that has been concealed from us. (a relative of "D B" ) It's only a misdemeanor charge. I thought it was a start. This man is accused of interfering with a homicide investigation.

We believe he buried moms car according to what police learned while interviewing this suspect. A huge excavation took place, 3 cars were recovered, unearthed from this mans backyard, but mom's car was not found. The suspect was scheduled to be in court Dec 5th to possibly accept a guilty plea and a $250 fine and
wow- that's it! Why are we sending the message that it's ok to lie to state police investigators, you will basically just walk away!

As mom's belongings were completely removed, not even a link ball remained of her. In her house, the day she "WENT MISSING" in1984, her belongings, as well as her remains, could be in that car! A few weeks back when the prosecutor told me they were just going to plea him out with that fine, I let him know how unhappy I was. I told him "D B" carries that in his left pocket daily, who is that going to hurt?

I then decided I'd go to the court to see this for myself. However, his lawyer felt the need to pull something shady. On the morning of court last month, supposedly the day of this final continuance, after I drove almost an hour, his lawyer called in (after 9:30 am) and said they needed a new date as she has another murder case somewhere else and can not be there to represent him. I was so furious because this attorney had almost 2 months to get her calendar straight! I immediately asked to speak with the judge and my wish was granted, in her open court with the accused to my right!

I suppose I watch too much TV because I thought my request would be a discussion, privately, in chambers! This was one of the hardest things I'd ever done, trying to be mom's voice in a court of law for the very first time in 24 years, I pleaded with the court to impose the maximum sentence!

I keep hoping and praying that one day, someone with ovaries/testicles will truly hear my story, realizing something must be done, stand up beside me and help me fight this evil.

Believe me, if I had ANY money, I would certainly have been paying for justice for my mom. I can only use every fiber of my being to right this wrong. I've tried to make this broken justice system work for my mother, my family! Something is seriously wrong when killers are allowed to get away with murder.

In my case, not only do we know in our hearts who killed our mom, but they hid our moms remains somewhere. What kind of a monster does that! He also made my mother quit claim her home to him for $1 about 6 weeks prior to her disappearance, and he still resides in mom's house with his mistress, now wife. He took the home out of OUR moms name and gave it to his 3rd wife.

I only want this case solved! The tragedy that happened to my family so long ago threw my sister and I into a state of shock we still feel to this day!

We have been left shattered, still trying to put the pieces of ourselves back together. We thought this was supposed to be moms time for working so hard raising 6 kids and putting up with all the abuse all those years! 6 kids were grown and out of the house, this was supposed to be her time to enjoy life! But mom found out about the affair, and we believe she finally wanted out, like this was the last straw.

This family took everything from us, our childhoods, our mother and even now he takes from my life!

He (and those that keep his secret) also killed a part of me that day too. I have never been the same since my world was shattered in August 1984! My mother was the most beautiful spirit, she was always there helping anyone that needed anything! To further my pain and suffering, authorities made so many mistakes. I've pushed and screamed to be my mothers voice all these 24 years and now I'm being told that even this old state police trooper buddy has lawyered up!

We know that there are people within the community, as well as several persons of interest that do have the missing puzzle piece that we need to solve this case.

I struggle every day to get out of bed to fight for what's right ! Until I know exactly what happened to my mom and I know we've done everything possible to locate her remains, I will be tortured by this ongoing tragic event that occurred in 1984. I can only best describe this daymare as...my mom cries out to my spirit for help!

I have been a wife and mom of 4 for 27 years. I am busy, but the disappearance and
unsolved homicide of my mother, well, it is just there with me every single day, I feel the loss of her beautiful presence.

I ask why have I been tortured by this for so long? Because my state has allowed this crime to go unsolved all these years. I continue to fight for my mom and those that I didn't even know, others that are missing. On behalf of my children, my goal is to show my kids, my nephew and my family that justice really does exist, decent people really do care!

Please join me in a prayer that all of our missing loved ones will be returned to us. Pray that our lawmakers will assist us in making tougher laws. If society no longer knows the difference between right and wrong, then it is our obligation to remind them with a few more laws !

Thank you Peace4 the Missing....4 being here 4 us!

Renee Pernice, Still Missing

Shon Pernice!  You have a lot of questions to answer!  Your wife and the mother of your children has been missing over 15 days now!  Why are you not out looking for her?  Why are you not willingly talking to police?

The case of missing mother, Renee Pernice, is ringing the same bells as the case of another man by the same S.P. intials!  I believe in the premise of "innocent until proven guilty", however, Shon Pernice's absence from searches and questioning is raising a lot of eyebrows.

A fellow blogger, years ago, commented during the Laci Peterson case on the handbook that Scott Peterson, Mark Hacking, Michael Peterson and several others at the time have followed.  She affectionately called it "Spousal Murrrrder Theater"!

From "Observations of a Misfit":

November 18, 2006

I Love You to Death - Reprise

Sam and Marilyn Sheppard
Jeffrey and Colette MacDonald
Eric and Pegye Bechler
Michael and Jennifer Blagg
Michael and Kathleen Peterson
Bruce and Jana Koklich
Greg and Kristin deVillers
Scott and Laci Peterson
Mark and Lori Hacking

What do these couples have in common?
  • Proclaimed by friends and family to be doting lovebirds.
  • Affluent, professional, well educated and living in nice neighborhoods.
  • Statistically very low chances for victimization by strange assailants.
  • The victims were found dead under suspicious circumstances, murdered, or vanished without a trace.
  • Most of the victims were pregnant at the time of their murder.
  • The accused or suspected spouse was guilty of major deception, chronic infidelity or was carrying on an extramarital relationship at the time of their spouse’s “disappearance” or murder.
  • All of the accused staged dramatic scenarios (staged domestic homicides, per FBI parlance) to deflect suspicion.
  • None of the couples had a history of abuse or domestic violence. The Bechlers and the Koklichs ran businesses together. Most were first marriages where the couple met in college.
  • In most cases, there were severe financial problems that were not disclosed until after an investigation of the crimes, and large life insurance policies on the missing or murdered spouse.
  • What were previously close family relationships among in-laws and siblings were irreparably divided by the incidents. The family of the victim tirelessly pursued justice and actively assisted the prosecution.
The Scorecard:
Sheppard – conviction was overturned, accused passed away rather young.
MacDonald – convicted of multiple murders; was eligible for a parole hearing in 1991, still working on an appeal based on DNA evidence, but don’t expect to see him strolling on the beach anytime soon.
Bechler – convicted (without the body of his wife ever being found) - currently serving a life sentence.
Blagg - convicted of murdering his wife, but has not been charged or tried for his daughter's murder.
Michael Peterson – convicted and sentenced to life without parole.
Bruce Koklich – convicted of second degree murder (with no body found), sentenced to 15 years to life.
Kristin Rossum – sentenced to life.
Scott Peterson - convicted of double murder and condemned to death.
Mark Hacking - pled guilty and is serving an inexact amount of time.
Oh yeah, they loved them to death!

Shon Pernice!  Check the scoreboard!

Although it's stated that none of the above cases had a history of domestic violence, I would further clarify and say that there were probably no reports made to authorities, but I would bet the house that there were underlying tensions in these couples' relationships.

According to reports, the family of Renee Pernice are close to certain that she has met with foul play, and they seem to be accepting the inevitable on the grounds that she would never leave her children behind and leave her home willingly.  They are unfaltering in that statement.  They want her home, they want questions answered, and they want justice.  They, as well as four children,  deserve that much.

Recipe For Hope, Stacy Peterson

Are you sick and tired of seeing the shenanigans of Drew Peterson and his merry band of pranksters constantly in the news and on your TV? Have you had about enough of this constant barrage of disrespect for the mothers of his children? What can you do about it? What can you do to bring back the respect and dignity to this three ring circus?

There is a group of people on the internet that are fighting to do just that.

This group would like to see the dignity and respect for Stacy Peterson and Kathleen Savio be restored, not only on the internet, but in mainstream media as well.

If Stacy or Kathleen had reached out to a domestic violence organization, maybe they would be here today to relate their stories.

This group would like to raise money to bolster the efforts of local domestic violence organizations and the way they would like to do that is publish a cookbook.

Not just any ordinary cookbook, but a cookbook with recipes along with safety tips for women caught in this cycle of abuse. Are you a survivor of violence, or is someone you know caught in an abusive relationship. Some of these tips you offer could save someone's life.

This is one of the easiest, no cost to you, things you can do! Just write out your favorite recipe, add your name and city, if you like, and email it to:

recipesforstacy@gmail.com

Oh! One more thing!!...Please, please include any safety tips for that someone you know who is looking to safely get out of the cycle of abuse! These valuable tips will be included in the cookbook in recipe form.....sort of like 1oz. of prevention, 1C safety, stir in a pinch of caution and don't let it boil over!

All of the printing costs are donated and ALL proceeds will go to an organization that helps women safely survive!

DO IT TODAY!

William (Billy) Smolinski, Monday4 the Missing

In two days, January 14, William "Billy" Smolinski will be 36 years old.

On August 24, 2004 Billy vanished.

The most comprehensive series of articles about the disappearance of Billy Smolinski is written by Holliston of ZeroGossipand I urge everyone to read all of the entries to get the details of the story from the beginning to the present.

This is a missing person's case that has been convoluted from the very beginning when Waterbury, CT police made the family wait three days before they would take a missing persons report. That was only the start of an uncooperative relationship ultimately leading to the arrest of Billy's mother, Jan, lost DNA samples, and Jan's relentless pursuit of the States Attorney and Governor of CT and contacting the FBI herself to get action.
I just want to let you know if you ask anyone who knew me my life prior to Billy's disappearance, I was quiet, minded my own business and would not challenge. I was forced to either sink or swim and of course I chose the latter.
Had Jan Smolinski not been the consummate mother, never, ever giving it a second thought to do everything in her power to search for her son, this case may have never even been opened. She has tirelessly, day after day, worked this case with tenacity in an effort to get answers about her son. Media outlets, bloggers, and writers have tried to get this story told, but officials and Waterbury in general, for some reason, don't want that.
The media, with the exception of Billy's hometown newspaper, The Waterbury-Republican, has been excellent, Jan said. "I don't know why, but they (the newspaper) washed their hands of Billy. We went to see the state's attorney in Waterbury and asked him for help and his answer to us was 'you care about your son, but no one else does.' I never thought people in authority would ignore situations like this."
Not only has Jan worked daily for Billy, but has given so much of herself to helping others in the same situation with nowhere to get answers. She has not only been instrumental in setting up vigils, making contact with organizations, making a quilt for the missing and speaking engagements, but she has reached out to our congressional leaders to change legislation nationally to benefit how missing persons cases are handled in the future.

This entry has not turned into a spotlight for Billy Smolinski's mother, Jan, but a spotlight on what a family of a missing person often endures. We all want to change that.

Every family of a missing son or daughter, mother or father, sister or brother wants to know that the tragedy they are experiencing is not in vain.

Billy Smolinski will be 36 years old, he is a much loved son, brother and friend. The day he is found and brought home to his family will be the day they will rest their hearts, rest their minds and soothe their souls.

Jan ends all of her correspondence, "Always Hope".

We will always keep the hope alive, and the candle burning .

From Jan Smolinski:
On January 14 Billy would have been celebrating another birthday. This is the fifth birthday that has gone by without him. A senseless act of violence has taken him away. $60,000 is a BIG NUMBER put some dollars in your pocket by coming forward IF YOU KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT HIS DISAPPEARANCE, it is all yours for the RECOVERY OR RETURN of our son. Happy Birthday Billy we love and miss you. Giving up is NEVER an option no matter how long it takes. 2009 is the year for answers. With God ALL things are possible. EVIL FLOURISHES WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING

Maria Fernandez Has Been Found

A South Carolina mother's worst fears are unfolding as remains were found and authorities are 99% sure they belong to Aretha Maria Fernandez who has been missing since last September 3 leaving behind a small son.

Although no charges have been filed, her boyfriend was named a person of interest early on and has not cooperated with the investigation, possibly on the advice of the attorney he hired immediately.

After hearing that her daughter was dead, Susie Fernandez said the pain was "just too hard to take.

"No family should ever go through this," she said. "No family."

You are right, Ms. Fernandez, no family should have to suffer in the wake of child gone missing. And no child should have to go through life wondering what happened to his mother. You have my heartfelt sympathies.

"If somebody knows something, they really just need to let their conscience get the best of them and come forward," said Jennifer Timmons, SLED communications director.

Information can be called into the Union County Sheriff's Office at 429-1612 or to CrimeStoppers at 427-0800.

Renee Pernice

Renee Pernice, 35, and a mother of 3 children has been missing from her Kansas City home since Friday, January 2. The last person to see her was her husband, Shon Pernice, who reports that she left the house that morning on foot, but he "can't remember" where she said she was going. Their children were not at home at the time, spending the night with neighbors. Her cell phone has been found approximately 15 miles from the home.

It is reported that the couple had previous problems in their marriage, Renee had filed for divorce in 2005 but withdrew her petition. Shon Pernice, a firefighter, was a veteran from the Iraqi war and was getting ready to deploy once again to Iraq. He immediately hired a lawyer and has not been charged or named as a person of interest in Renee's disappearance.

The area that she would frequent has been the target of searches using ground personnel, canine and horses. So far nothing has been found, but all signals are pointing to foul play being involved.
Pernice's mother, Linda Lockwood, spoke to FOX 4 News and said she fears the worst. Through tears, she said, "It's been too long for her to not have contacted any of us, so we feel like something bad has happened. She would never, never, never leave her kids and just not say anything to anybody. There's no way."
Renee is a teaching nurse at a local hospital and by all accounts it is totally out of character for her to leave her home, leave her children, and walk away from her life. She is close to her family members and keeps in close contact with them, so for her not to call after this long is quite suspicious.

What do we have going on here? Without pointing fingers, could it be another military man gone mad? There seems to be a correlation lately with serving in the military and murdering spouses. What should be done to help our returning vets assimilate back into their lives, their homes and their marriages so that more children are left without a mother?

Or do we have another possible "Drew Peterson" statement that she ran away to be with another man?
Baldwin(Shon Pernice's lawyer) said Pernice feels helpless.

“He misses her; he wants her back even if she chooses not to be with him; she needs to be there for the kids,” he said.

What we do know from all reports is that Renee Pernice most likely did not just walk out of her home last Friday. She had way too much going on in her life with a successful career and 3 young children who friends say were her life.

As the days go on, the chances of finding Renee alive are very slim, her family and friends are aware of that. What about 3 young children without a mother? Who should be held accountable for their loss?

If indeed this is another case of spousal murder, we have another abuser who has followed the pattern.

Charlotte Moriarty and son Marx Barnes

Hawaii is a paradise to many who visit and back in 1977, before the world became a smaller place, it was a faraway land of surfing and beautiful beaches. Charlotte Moriarty and her boyfriend, Mark Barnes, along with their new son, Marx, were living in that paradise land, but was it really paradise?

Charlotte and Marx vanished on June 21, 1977 while taking a walk. The child's stroller was found empty hours later at a bus stop in Honolulu. According to Mark Barnes, Charlotte left with no explanation before and he just figured this was another one of those times. He waited 2 weeks before calling police and filing a missing persons report.
"Friendly couple, mind their own business. They used to fight but it wasn't anything serious," said 77-year-old Hanaimoa resident Joe Kahele. "I know they had a baby, and they used to take good care of the baby."

Charlotte had an 8 year old daughter from a previous relationship who was scheduled to come for a visit from California to see her mother and new brother, however that visit didn't happen. Her sister, Patricia, and other family members feel that Charlotte would never jeopardize this visit by taking off, and that she would definitely be in contact with her family to let them know of her plans.
"I can't explain what it's like to not know where a parent is," said Monnheimer, who was 8 years old when Moriarty disappeared. "You're always looking, always scanning every crowd."

There are several points of conflicting information to come out of the case since 1977, one being that Mark Barnes was fearful that Charlotte wasn't capable of taking care of Marx because she was under the care of a psychiatrist. Most of the information about the disappearance has come from Barnes himself and has been disputed by Charlotte's family members for years.

The case is still regarded as an open investigation. Patricia Moriarty has even consulted psychics who state that Charlotte and Marx are both dead and that they were murdered. There is no way to prove this theory, but the family has taken measures to have Charlotte and Marx declared dead on the suggestion of Honolulu Police Department Missing Persons Division. Her daughter, Jennifer Monnheimer,  always held this belief, and the psychics reinforced that for her.
Monnheimer said even if she and her aunt are unsuccessful finding Charlotte and Marx, at least they will know they did everything they could.
"For years the search never ended, it never stopped," said Monnheimer, who at 32 is a year older than her mother was when she disappeared. "But by then I guess I'll have to find a way to go on with my life."

Mark Barnes went on with his life, remarrying and divorcing in California. No charges were ever filed against him.

    Roxanne Paltauf, Monday4 the Missing

An 18 year old, Roxanne was staying at a Budget motel with her boyfriend on July 7, 2006, they had an argument, she walked out and has never been seen again. According to Louis Walls, who was 30 at the time, he went back to the motel room to cool off, and later went out to look for her to no avail. The motel was in a rather run down area of Austin, Texas frequented by prostitutes and drug dealers, not an area for a young lady to feel safe. Roxanne is said to have left that motel room with nothing, no cell phone, no purse, no money, only in a pair of shorts, tank top and flip flops.

The area is one where protests were held to take back the neighborhood and make it safe. At the rally was Roxanne's mother, Liz Harris, doing everything to get her daughter's information out to the people in the area. A billboard company donated their services so that Roxanne's picture is out in the public at all times in hopes of someone coming forward with information.

What the public doesn't realize is the lengths a family has to go to gain exposure for a missing loved one. At 18, Roxanne is an adult and there is no law against just walking away from your family, but many times that's not the case and authorities don't always listen to the pleas of the family who know differently. The area from where she disappeard was searched extensively a few days after she was reported missing, but no evidence of Roxanne was found.

Roxanne has three sisters and a brother who she was close to and they miss her greatly. It's highly unusual that she would be gone for so long without contact with her family. The family has so many questions that have gone unanswered since July 7, 2006 and pray that someone will come forward with information.

January 3 was Roxanne's birthday. The family will celebrate yet another birthday without the guest of honor present. But Roxanne is always present in the hopes and dreams of her family until the day she returns to them.

    Happy Birthday, Roxanne.

Faye Aline Self Has A Few Questions

Faye Aline Self has been missing for 26 years from Coushatta, Red River Parish, Louisiana. Since that time there have been changes in the guard in local law enforcement, and with each change her case file becomes more convoluted.

Notorious serial killer, Henry Lee Lucas was the first to confess to her murder. Of course by that time Mr. Lucas, along with Ottis Toole , "The Tag Team From Hell" had killed so many people I'm sure they lost count in a spree that took them all over the country. Recently it was pronounced that Ottis Toole was indeed the killer of little Adam Walsh, son of John and Reve Walsh.

When that confession didn't fit the bill, along comes Robert Charles Browne, which really makes a little more sense because he was raised in the area and lived there at the time Aline went missing. Browne, also known as "The Confessor" and "The Devil's Right Hand Man" was best known for his conviction for killing little 13 year old Heather Dawn Church in Colorado.

Who really knows if either of these two had anything to do with the disappearance of Faye Aline Self, or if they were both used as patsys willing to take the rap for something else going on in Red River Parish? I'm sure that after 26 years whoever REALLY was responsible for this is hoping it has all been forgotten. WRONG!

What they didn't bank on was the 2 daughters Aline left behind, along with other family members who did not forget a mother, daughter, and sister. Faye Aline Self may never be found, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't deserve justice.

How about it, Red River Parish, Louisiana? Do you have answers to these questions?

    1. Why did the current sheriff tell me it was boyfriend as of 2006 when they knew Browne had confessed to both?

    2. Why were they telling both families these cases are in no way related, but Browne said he did both.

    3. If Wanda had fought with her attacker and had his hair in her hands, how come Boyfriend and/or Browne have not been ruled out? (or in?)
DNA would settle this...oh, but I bet they "can't lay their hands " on that evidence either. Samples of Browne's DNA were given to DA Jones by a det. from Colorado.

    4. Why, if Browne did kill my mom, did he not leave her in the bed, where she could be found?

    5. Why did he kill Hudson & Self in their beds, if his reason for killing women was that they are all lowlifes?

    6. Why Browne go into my mom's apt with no lights on and no car in the drive? How did he know she was there? How did she get home? The car was found at the bar by the police.

    7. Why being the genius that he is, Why did Browne leave my mom in her apt after he chloroformed her? He forgot his rope? But he remembers his rag in a bag...

    8. RR Bridge was the main road through the place, why was he not afraid of being seen dropping her body from there?

    9. Why did the police not search the dumpster after Hudson's murder? That is where said he through the murder weapon?

    10. Why were police showing crime scene photos around town?

    11. Why were no alarms raised by the SO when they discovered evidence was missing?

    12. Why was there no media on a missing woman and one murdered in a town with the population of less than 10,000?

    13. Why were case files allowed to be kept in the trunk of deputies cars?

    14. Why was no missing persons report taken immediately?

    15. How did the police know my mom wasn't coming back for the car?

    16. Why did they not contact the family directly, but a neighbor instead?

    17. Why if Browne was suspected in BOTH cases was he never interviewed?

    19. Why did no authorities in RR Parish contact any family member of either lady to tell of this new confession? Why did we have to hear it from the news?

    20. Why did RRSD lie to us about the Lucas Confession? Why IF IT REALLY exists can't we hear it? Why if it is "gibberish" can we not hear it? It wasn't gibberish when it was presented to our family all those times...

    21. If it (confession) is so "gibberish" how did the RRSD come to the conclusion Lucas was confessing? The man had a 71 IQ... smarter than the RRSD and the Texas Rangers. They would show him crime scene photos and he would memorize the details. The police would forget they questioned him and he would regurgitate back to them the information they had given him. They all used Lucas as a clearing house for old/cold cases. Much like they are doing Browne now.

    22. Why is it, in all of these nearly 26 years the only contact with our family came via a detective that is now long since dead. Why has S/T M Allen not answered any questions we presented?

    23. Why did he not videotape the interview conducted with a lady that was with my mom that night?

    24. Why is this case still being bungled?

    26. How much would it cost me to buy justice for Aline Self in RR Parish?

We may never find the answers to what happened to Faye Aline Self, but I guarantee Red River Parish has not seen the last of her pictures, and has not heard the last of the questions. Just step up to the plate, do your job and find this woman justice. Every human being deserves that much.
