Kelly Currin Morris: A Piece of Peace

Kelly Currin Morris has been found after she allegedly went looking for the family dog a year ago, September 3, 2008.  As the year wore on, and searches conducted, we watched the pain of this family who over and over again, went back out into the rural fields and woods of Stem, NC, knowing that one day their searching would end.  That day has come, Kelly has been found, and now the family is making arrangements to lay her in her final resting place.

At a time of Thanksgiving, I'm sure the family is thankful for the fact that Kelly is no longer missing, but I'm also sure that it's a bittersweet time knowing that she will never sit at her place at the table.
"It's like a brick is lifted off your chest," Hollis(Wanda Hollis, Kelly's mother) said. "You don't know what it's like until you go through it. It's unbelievably deep."
Saturday, November 28, a public memorial service is planned to honor the life of Kelly.  A fund is set up in lieu of flowers for her daughters.

As each of us sits with our families, thankful that we can reach out and touch each other this Thanksgiving Day, please take a moment during your grace to ask for a blessing for these young daughters.

Two little girls, like so many others out there, will spend the rest of their lives re-living losing their mother.

These are the surviving victims of a trauma that runs deep and lasts a lifetime.  May we someday find a way to outstretch our hands of hope to these little (and big) children, help them find a way to find a "piece of peace" in their day.

Kelly Currin Morris, Searching Continues

Since September 3, 2008 family members have organized searches every weekend for missing mother, Kelly Currin Morris of Stem, NC.   Every day, Pat Currin, Kelly's father,  has searched for his daughter and vows not to stop until she is found.  A reward of $30,000 from the family is offered, as well as $5000 from Gov. Mark Easley of North Carolina, for her return.

The number of volunteers has diminished greatly since September and the family needs much more support before vegetation grows thick and makes searching much more difficult.  This family is serious about bringing home this 29 year old mother of two little girls.  If you live in the area, please give a little of your time to this effort, it means so much to family members to know that their loved one is not forgotten just because their case isn't making daily headlines.

If you aren't able to physically search, think about donating lunches or water for the searchers.  Oftentimes it's cold or damp and nothing goes down as well as a hot cup of coffee or chocolate.  Granola bars are a great pick me up when bodies get tired.  If your budget doesn't allow for donations, please light a candle, say a prayer, drive by and show your support for Pat Currin and Kelly's family.  Sometimes that's all it takes to keep the spirits up and accomplish the mission.

You can contact the Kelly Currin Morris Command Center at 919-812-2310 or via e-mail, at: helpfindkelly@gmail.com. The command center is located at 2816 Old Weaver Trail in Creedmoor, North Carolina.  Every small bit you do could make all the difference in the world!

The Choice, Divorce or Murder?

When I followed the Scott Peterson case I was drawn to the fact that this man showed no emotion before and after his trial. His eyes were "dead" and hollow and he kept that blank look that was there from the beginning when Laci Peterson and her unborn child, Conor, first went missing. What was he thinking? What was behind that blank facade? How could he just go on living like nothing happened and start another relationship? After reading the book authored by Marilee Strong, "Erased", I came away with a clearer picture of the psychology involved in why men can "erase" their partners and sometimes even get away with it.

Lately it seems we have many more names to put on the list of cases covered in Marilee's book. Since I live in the Carolinas, those cases stand out in my mind, Janet Arbaroa, Michelle Young, Kelly Currin Morris, Carol Batten Dowless, and I'm sure there are more. Some of these spouses will get away with murder based on past cases, such as Peggy Dianovsky and Toni Bachman. Some of these spouses have confessed, some haven't been charged, but in each case there is a pattern that presents itself.

*Charm turns to manipulation and deceit.
*A pattern of control issues
*Escalation of domestic violence.
*The beginning of the end of the relationship.
*Woman goes missing.

As a follower of true crime for many years on several online forums and blogs, it's almost too easy to follow this pattern and accuse the spouse. My fellow sleuthers are not often wrong and follow these cases with diligence. The inconvenience of a divorce with the possibility of child support payments, the loss of control of the relationship, and an escalation of violence, moves these men into the realm of murder. It's also clear, in several cases, that he moves on with his life, remarries, has more children, and the missing woman is no longer spoken about, she has been "erased" for all intents and purposes, from the lives of her children and her family.

While Marilee Strong goes into great detail about every psychological aspect of these men, my concern is for the children that have been left behind. Their mothers have been literally erased from their lives, but the bond will always be there somewhere. The children left behind will always be searching, always carry the burden, and sometimes be brainwashed by the murdering spouse to forget and move on. What are the long term affects for these children, who many times witness acts of violence in the household? How can the cycle of violence ever be broken?

The words emotionally spoken by Sharon Rocha at the trial of her son-in-law Scott Peterson ring so true now as they did then. "Divorce is always an option, you didn't have to murder her!"

To this type of man, divorce is not an option. He will murder before he gives up any control, any money, and anything of his own. Mothers vanish every day, some we hear about and some we don't. Someone is getting away with murder in this country right now and there is no remorse, no empathy, no mourning, no signs whatsoever of an emotional loss. Most importantly, there are children who have questions, who have lost a mother, and will never see her again, she has vanished.

Kelly Currin Morris

As if scripted from a handbook, another mother vanishes in North Carolina and her husband is declared by law enforcment a "person of interest." Following in the same pattern as those before, Scott Morris has not participated in searches for his wife, has not given a straight story, and according to local gossip has threatened Kelly Currin Morris in the past.

Kelly Currin Morris has been missing since September 3 from her home in Stem, NC, a small, rural town near the Raleigh/Durham area. Authorities may not have known she was missing, but on the morning of September 4 the home she shared with her husband, Scott, and two young daughters was on fire. It has been stated that it was the result of arson.

Kelly's mother, Wanda Hollis, holds on to hope for her daughter as she participates in searches. She stated in an interview with MSNBC those words we have heard over and over:

"Kelly would not leave her girls; she would not leave her girls," Hollis said. Morris has two daughters who are staying with family as authorities are searching for their mother.

Kelly is described by local friends as being an "awsome" mother who was dedicated to her daughters. She participated in all of their activities, and was an all around great mom to her girls, one from a previous relationship.

Just like the others, Kelly's car was found nearby, she has no purse, money, keys or cell phone in her posession, they were all left behind. Scott Morris told authorities that she went to look for her dog, and never returned, an unlikely story.

Borrowing a phrase from another blogger, Kelly Morris's vanishing is another chapter written in the "Handbook of Spousal Murder". I hope this isn't the case, just as in all the other cases, but the script is sounding so very familiar.

Take a look at other North Carolina cases where mothers have vanished, like Nancy Cooper and Janet Arbaroa. The signs and evidence are there, there have been no arrests, the husbands have carried on with life, and these women are still missing. There are too many children out there that have to deal with this heartbreak

How can we write a chapter for them, if we can't bring their mothers home?
