Michelle Rust: Missing Mother From Maryland

On July 20, 2002 Michelle Rust left her home to go shopping for birthday supplies for her son's third birthday party which was being held later the same day.  What started out as a trip to the store ended up being the last time anyone has seen Michelle.  The last person to see her, her husband, Dwight, or "D.J."

When she didn't return to her home in Halethorpe, MD on time, family members started searching for her and found her vehicle abandoned in the neighboring community, Landsdowne, with a key broken off on the driver's side door lock.

The community and family came together and organized searches for Michelle, but they did not yield any clues as to her whereabouts.  No clothing, jewelry or personal items were ever found, not even a black bag she carried with her diabetic supplies inside.  After several months authorities categorized her vanishing as foul play and, of course, started searching for suspects.

It's reported that her husband, "D.J." was having extramarital affairs and feared that one of his girlfriends may have done harm to Michelle.  Authorities said that no one has reported seeing Michelle leave her home that day, other than what "D.J." told them.  He maintains his innocence in her disappearance and says that he saw her in her vehicle rounding the bend while leaving their home.  He also states there was no one else seen in the car with her.

Michelle Rust was attending Halethorpe Community Church and helped coordinate the youth activities there.  Those who knew her, adults and youth alike, described her as "likable with a passion and a heart for people."  Several of the youth befriended her and her vanishing left them mourning and praying for her return.  Although her parents, Ray and Gwen Lins, have accepted the fact that she is likely dead, they also describe her as a loving, caring mother who would never leave her child.

Although "D.J." Rust divorced Michelle in 2007, he still lives in the same home from which she disappeared in 2002 and retains custody of their son.   He has not been ruled out as a suspect.  After all these years the only ones who have been ruled out as suspects are Michelle's parents, Ray and Gwen Lins, who continue to miss her.

There is still an open and ongoing investigation and someone knows something.  By circulating this article around the internet you will be doing your small part in possibly getting the information in front of that someone who knows.

DNA testing to be done to confirm identity

MONTE VISTA — One of the San Luis Valley’s most tragic mysteries may have been solved this week with the discovery of human remains believed to be Danice Day who disappeared from Monte Vista seven and a half years ago.

Day, who would have been 27 years old on May 8, disappeared on January 9, 2002, from Monte Vista where she lived.

Rio Grande Sheriff Brian Norton announced on Friday that human remains located in Lyman Lake State Park, Arizona, are believed to be those of the missing mother of two. Although not releasing the connection between Arizona and the San Luis Valley, or how authorities were led there, the sheriff said the remains were located through a combined effort of the Rio Grande Sheriff’s Office, Apache County Sheriff’s Office and the Utah Department of Public Safety Dive Team.

Norton said the dramatic turn in this seven-year-old case was the result of continued investigation over the years by his office and the district attorney’s office.

Norton said the remains have been turned over to the El Paso County forensic pathologist for further DNA testing that will hopefully lead to positive identification.

“We are looking for a quick turn around,” Norton said. However, he said it could be days or weeks before the results of the DNA testing are available.

The sheriff said he could not comment further on the case until the results are back.

Norton said no one has yet been charged in the Day case, and investigation continues regarding possible suspects.

“Due to court orders, no further information will be released,” Norton stated.

The sheriff said his office notified Day’s family about this most recent development.

The family is “just trying to process it all right now,” Danice’s older sister Jacqui Flint said on Friday.

“Everybody processes grief a little bit differently. Now we just have to come to terms all over again.”

She added, “I thought we would be relieved, and it’s like she is dead all over again because we did not ever know she was fully gone ... We just have mixed emotions ... I am not sure how to feel right now.”

Jacqui said although family members presumed Danice was dead, “we still half hoped ...”

She said from the information provided by the sheriff’s office, the family is fairly certain Danice has finally be found and can now be put to rest.

“We have had so many false leads,” Jacqui said. “We are pretty sure this time. We continually prayed that there would be closure, and this has led us closer to that closure we have wanted for so long.”

Because Danice had not been found, her family had not been able to hold a funeral or memorial for her, or to completely grieve. If the results of the DNA tests come back positive, the family will probably plan a funeral service for Danice, her sister said.

“We will wait until it’s confirmed. I know I want to put something together to make sure she’s honored somehow.”

Not allowing Danice’s memory to fade, Jacqui has maintained a web site “Danice Day, a web site regarding the disappearance of a young Colorado mother of two missing since January 9, 2002.”

The site chronicles the investigations of Danice’s case through newspaper articles from 2002 through last October when a “mystery bone” was found in Monte Vista. The discovery led to another false lead and another false hope for the family.

Initial articles talked about rewards offered for information on “missing mom” and described Danice’s height, weight, hair color, eye color and piercings.

Another article talked about searchers looking for “missing waitress” who already feared she was dead. Further articles spoke about potential suspects.

Letters to the editor were posted from family members. Articles featured candlelight vigils and gatherings on the anniversaries of Danice’s disappearance. First it was one year. This January it was seven.

Many postings were made by Danice’s father Rod who lives in the Valley. He counted the days since his daughter went missing and shared his anger that no one had been held accountable for her loss.

In October 2004, Rod Day recalled in “Danice of a Thousand Days” that it had been 1,000 days at that time since Danice was gone. “It goes without saying---our little girl is still missed very much! And we (all) love her,” he wrote.

Jacqui posted articles about fundraising efforts for the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation that posted a reward for information to help find Day.

The Danice Day web site also shared photographs from Danice’s life from childhood to adulthood, remembered special milestones such as birthdays and related the emotions of a family whose loved one was still out there.

An early photo showed a young Danice in a blue sweater, another camping, another with her cousins, and another with her own two children.

Danice’s oldest child, who was only 2 1/2 when his mother went missing, lives with his father in Missouri, and her daughter, who was just an infant when her mother disappeared, is being cared for by a paternal grandfather.

Danice shared a May 8 birthday with her daughter. Danice would have been 27 last month. Her older sister wrote a “happy birthday” note on the web site stating that Danice had been gone so long it felt sometimes as if she did not really know her anymore.

“I do remember this, though, she is/was one of the best friends I ever had and one of the most special people anyone could ever know. The mark she left on her family and friend’s lives will not change or go away.”

Jacqui said on Friday that although the recent discovery of what authorities believe to be her sister’s remains will bring some closure for the family, it will never completely end until someone is held accountable for Danice’s death.

“I just want to see justice,” Jacqui said.

She said one of the people who kept attention on her sister’s case was her grandfather who did not live to see the latest development in the case. He died last September.

“He never gave up. He always said ‘Jacqui don’t ever give up. Something’s going to happen’ ... He was right to keep hope alive.”

Sep 23, 2009 10:52 am US/Mountain Body Found In Ariz. Lake Confirmed As Colo. WomanDEL NORTE, Colo. (AP) ― Authorities say a body retrieved from an Arizona lake is that of a Colorado mother of two who disappeared more than seven years ago.

Officials in Rio Grande County, Colo., said Tuesday that DNA tests confirmed the body was Danice Day.

She was 19 when she disappeared from Monte Vista, Colo., in 2002. Her body was found in a barrel in Arizona's Lyman Lake in June. The cause of death hasn't been determined.

Rio Grande County District Attorney David Mahonee says 33-year-old Victor Braun, Day's boyfriend and the father of one of her children, will be charged with manslaughter.

Sheriff Brian Norton says investigators found Day's body through "negotiations" between Braun's attorney and prosecutors.

Day once lived in Laramie, Wyo., where her mother still lives.

Leona Kinsey

"I remember when I was younger and I crashed on my bike, I came inside crying and My mom cleaned my scrape and told me to stop crying, because my tears weren’t real. I thougth she was crazy“ Those aren’t real tears, you’ll forget about the pain in a few minutes.” She was right. I soon forgot and before I knew it was outside playing like it never happened. Now, nine years later I am still crying over her loss and I know the tears are real because they come from the inside out.

Nine years ago Leona Kinsey was enjoying the lifestyle the area afforded with hunting, fishing, camping and running her own landscaping business. The week of October 25, 1999 her appointment book shows that she was booked for the whole week. That week turned out to be the last time Leona was seen, Monday October 25 at 4:30pm by her boyfriend only called "Lonnie".

Foul play is suspected, but no suspects have been named. Leona's vehicle was found the following Friday in the parking lot of a grocery store, but after authorities examined it, there was no evidence found, no signs of foul play in the vehicle itself. They have interviewed many they feel may be connected to the case, but have yet to name anyone in particular as a person of interest or suspect.

Nine years later a remembrance ceremony took place in the Native American tradition of Leona's heritage.She loved nature and it was only fitting that prayers and traditional dances were a part of it along with Native

music.

Society member Tom Futter said he thinks a love of nature and belief in a spiritual being sustained Kinsey throughout her life.

“When you get to where you’re going, look at Mother Nature. Say a prayer to Grandfather and he will guide you,” Futter said.

For Carolyn DeFord remembering her mother's birthday is especially hard, memories tend to blur with time, but she was not ready to lose her mother and all of the future times they had planned. She is missing her today as much as she has missed her for the last nine years. A daughter searching for a mother lost to her is a daily reminder and when she closes her eyes she can see her, and keep those memories alive.

When I have a lot of worries, and my soul is weighted down,

Carlos Diaz, Monday4 the Missing

"Carlos, if you’re out there and you get a chance to hear this, somehow, some way, give us some sign of where you are because we love you and we miss you and it’s been a long time.  You have 2 grandsons, that one is carrying your name, and wants to see you.  And we love you.  Oh God, that’s hard."

This is the message that Nancy Freneire, sister of Carlos Diaz, would like to convey to her brother.  In an interview with Todd Matthews on his "Missing Pieces" show, Nancy recounts the events of December 23, 1986.

Carlos and his family were attending a reunion in the Bronx, NY home of another sister.  The family dog had died and being that the dog was closest to Carlos, he went to bury it.  As time went on and it got later, another brother noticed that Carlos left without any ID, which was unusual for him, felt that Carlos had plenty of time to bury the dog and return, and decided he better go out looking for him.  The brother found the dog that Carlos had left with to bury, but there was no sign of Carlos anywhere.

When Carlos did not return home, the family made the decision to go to the police and file a missing persons report based on the facts that he was unlikely to stay away from his family and especially his little daughter.  Due to the fact that Carlos was 32 at the time, he fell into a "guideline" that said it was assumed since he was an adult, he probably just took off.  The family was not able to get the police to take a report.

Over 20 years have gone by and this family has continued their search for Carlos.  The internet has provided places to list missing persons information, however, there are a lot of agencies and sites that can not do anything without a police missing persons report filed and no NCIC number to go by.  Now, over 20 years later, the family is told that too much time has passed and the police will still not file a report.

Recently, Nancy was able to have a DNA sample taken and that sample may be the key to finding Carlos who is also listed in the Doe Network.   Previous to going missing, Carlos had a head injury which could have resulted in memory loss.  Could he be out there after all this time?  Could he be in a facility not knowing who he really is?  There could be any number of answers and his family is able to accept any of them as long as they know what happened to Carlos.

Nancy and her family, including the daughter of Carlos, have a huge void in their lives which can only be filled with answers. So many changes happen in a family in 20 years, fathers die, children grow up and have children of their own, and sisters and brothers go their separate ways.  One thing has been a constant in the family of Carlos Diaz and that is that they miss him, they love him, and they will not stop searching for him.  One day, with the help of organizations like NAMUS and DOE Network, and many others, this family will know the answers and they will finally be at peace.

Viridiana Maldonado, Update

According to the Charleston Post and Courier article of November 8, 2008, Viridiana's husband, Jorge Maldonado is now in custody on charges unrelated to her disappearance.

When Maldonado, 22, stepped off the a plane in Atlanta on Wednesday, federal agents took him into custody. His attorney in the custody case, Tommy Bolus, explained the situation to a judge during Friday's hearing.
"He's in federal custody, he can't assert his rights today," Bolus told Judge Tommy Edwards of the 10th Judicial Circuit. "Obviously, right now, he's held up."

Jorge Maldonado had taken their child and fled to the Dominican Republic in August during a fight for custody with Viridiana's family.   The judge deciding the case ordered him to attend a hearing, with the child, on the custody issue in November, but much to his surprise, federal agents took him into custody for totally unrelated charges and he is now incarcerated.

Early in 2007 Viridiana and her husband lived near Tacoma, Washington where he was stationed with the Army.  There were incidents of domestic violence and Viridiana left the home with her children, living in a shelter for 3 months before returning to her family in North Charleston.  She was last seen on the evening of October 11, 2007 as she left to go out with friends.  She vanished.

Jorge returned to South Carolina to take his child away from Viridiana's family and took him back to Washington until he was discharged from the Army.  He then moved back to South Carolina.

Early on in the investigation he reported to officers that he was in Washington at the time that Viridiana disappeared, however, it was found the same day that Viridiana disappeared, October 11, he had been questioned by police in an Ilinois parking lot, and that his cell phone records show usage several times on a route from Illinois to South Carolina.  When confronted with the information, Jorge quit talking to investigators.

In this small child's little life he has been back and forth across the country, lost his mother, taken from her family, taken out of the country to live, taken from his father and has been placed with his aunt.  Tell me what kind of emotional repercussions are in store for him?  I have every reason to believe that he is in a loving home, and a loving environment, but what is in store for him next?  May this little one find peace someday knowing that his mother is found, and may that day be soon.  Viridiana Maldonado needs to be found and reunited with her family.

April Susanne Wiss, Monday4 the Missing

April Susanne Wiss was 16 years old in January, 2000 and staying with a friend of her mother, Dee Clasen, in the same apartment building in Wichita, Kansas. April, nicknamed "Squeaky", apparently needed to see what life was like on her own outside of her mother's care and was probably testing her boundaries as most 16 year olds.

April was scheduled to testify as a witness in a felony trial on January 13, 2000, but she never made that date. Although she was apprehensive about the testimony, she agreed to testify as a witness. On the evening of January 11, just 2 days before the trial, April left home with her wallet, pager and keys, never to be heard from again.

According to Dee, April didn't just take off, although initially she was classified as a runaway, then re-

classified as a missing person. She had just given money to her roommate for food and rent, the money was still at their home, along with April's clothes and belongings things she would have needed if she was running away.

There have been no reports of whether April received a phone call before leaving her home, of a scheduled date. Her roommate had already gone to bed, so probably wouldn't know if a phone call came in for her. As in similar cases authorities are baffled and can't prove whether her disappearance is connected to testifying, whether she met with foul play, or if she left for California, which she had often wanted to do.

Dee Clasen has been a champion for the missing since April's disappearance. She has worked locally in Wichita to bring awareness to the many missing persons in Kansas, with Team Hope, and also has featured April with several missing persons organizations, including 411Gina and their "Squeaky Wheel Tour", CUE Center for Missing Persons and the "Road to Remember Tour", Project Jason and the "18 Wheel Angels".

Dee has been instrumental in honoring April this year at Peace4 the Missing by creating the "April Tree", an interactive way for members to support and encourage each other through the holiday season, which is extremely hard to enjoy when your loved one is missing.

Gina Bos

If ever there were missing puzzle pieces, this mother's vanishing is definitely the case. As much as I have hunted online for information or clues pertaining to the disappearance of Gina Bos, there just aren't any. From all accounts that I have read Gina (Regina) comes from a very musical family, a very close family, and she loves holidays and celebrations, always to be counted on to do the extra touches when needed.

Gina seems to me to be an "artsy" type of person, always having the need to be creative, whether it is her music, crafting costumes, or her art. It has been my experience that writers, painters, and musicians don't always aspire to fame and fortune, but just want to be involved in their art. It completes them and makes them whole. As a mother, an artist, a much loved daughter and sister, it seems Gina Bos had a very full and happy life. I have found no reports of an unhappy relationship or her having any enemies. Her disappearance is truly puzzling.

Gina is a beautiful, 40 year old mother of three, two sons and a daughter that she was raising as a single mother. All that is known about the evening of October 17, 2000 is that Gina gave a performance at Duggin's Pub in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was seen with her beloved guitar, "Harley", over her shoulder and walking out of the pub. The next morning her car was discovered across the street, the trunk ajar and her guitar in the trunk. There are no other clues, no other evidence, nothing leading authorities to the answers to what happened to Gina that night.

Her family knows Gina is dead.

"If she were alive we would know," her mother says. "She would have never left her children. Never. Ever."

This family is missing the puzzle piece that makes them whole. They have done monumental things to find her, and they have also done monumental things to help others through their own pain and heartbreak. Gina's sister, Jannel Rap belongs to a band called Clementine, who regularly performs to bring awareness to Gina and others. The "Squeaky Wheel Tour" is a well known and respected global outreach for families searching for a missing loved one. The organization 411Gina works tirelessly to expose scores of missing persons who otherwise would not be known.

The search for Gina Bos will continue until this family puzzle piece is put back into the place where only a perfect fit exists. It will not stop until there are answers, answers for every family member left behind and especially for Gina's children.

There is someone out there who knows something. I hope that one day soon that person will come forward and that this mystery will be solved.

Charlotte Rexroad Wyne

March 11, 1970 in Canton, Ohio a mother of three daughters and a son vanished from the streets of downtown Canton. There is not much information available about Charlotte or why she would simply walk away from her family. I don't believe the McKinley Hotel she was residing in is the same as the McKinley Grande Hotel in Canton today, and definitely did not have the amenities.

Reading the little I have been able to find out about Charlotte, questions abound. Why was she living in the hotel? Was she living their with her family or was she separated from them at the time? Why was she walking alone in the 400 block of East Tuscarawas Ave.? I know in 1970 that was not a safe place to be, I lived in Canton then.

What happened at 8:55 that night that she would be alone and walking in the dark, according to her husband? Did she just have enough of being a mother and wife? Was there trouble in the marriage? Did life just become too much for her and she simply hitched a ride into oblivion?

One small picture and very little information is all I have been able to find. I do know that there are four grown children of Charlotte who probably don't have the answers either, but I would bet that they are still searching for her, even if only in their hearts. I do know that they must have the same questions as I do. Where is Charlotte Wyne?

This may be a cold, cold case to some, but I would say that to the children left behind it is still foremost in their minds.
